From Under the Steps
No one knew exactly when she arrived.
One morning, there she was—a small black-and-white cat tucked beneath the church steps, watching the world with wide golden eyes. She was thin enough that her ribs hinted through her fur, but she was clever, and she was cautious. She had learned that not every place was safe and not every person was kind.
So she stayed quiet.
For weeks, she lived beneath those steps, observing the rhythm of church life. She watched parishioners come and go. She listened to doors open and close. She learned the sounds of conversation from the Parish Hall and the timbre of the organ for worship.
The choir director saw her most often.
In the cool hush of early mornings and the fading light of evenings, their paths would cross. The cat would sit silently in the shadows while the choir director offered a quiet greeting. Neither pressed the other. They simply acknowledged one another, day after day, building the sort of trust that grows best when left alone.
Then one morning, the little cat made a decision.
She was ready.
And so she introduced herself in the most cat-like way possible.
She sang the song of her people.
Her voice echoed across the church grounds as she announced her existence with great enthusiasm and absolutely no concern for volume. The church staff quickly discovered that beneath the steps lived not a silent observer, but a remarkably opinionated feline.
Naturally, every member of the staff was an animal lover.
And naturally, every one of them looked at a skinny little kitty singing for breakfast and felt an immediate sense of responsibility.
Food began appearing beneath the steps.
For several days, meals arrived regularly, along with gentle conversations and patient attention. The cat accepted these offerings as her due and continued sharing her musical gifts with the church community.
Then came a greater act of love.
One day she was carefully scooped up, placed into a carrier, and whisked away for a spay surgery and vaccinations. It was not, in her opinion, the finest adventure she had ever experienced. Nevertheless, she endured it with dignity.
Afterward, she spent several days resting and recovering. The world became smaller for a little while as anesthesia wore off and healing took place. She kept to herself and gathered her strength.
But it wasn’t long before the church grounds rang once again with her unmistakable voice.
She returned to her daily rounds with renewed determination and a schedule to keep.
Because of her enthusiastic and evangelical preaching to all who would listen, the staff gave her a name that suited her perfectly:
Evangeline.
Today, Evangeline is a beloved fixture around the church.
She greets visitors in the parking lot as though serving on the official welcoming committee. She appears faithfully at the Parish Hall door to inform the secretary and sexton whenever she believes mealtime should commence. She attends the Wednesday Morning Men’s Coffee and Prayer Group, where she contributes thoughtful observations, mostly through meows.
When she is not meeting parishioners, she can often be found studying the grounds and, quite possibly, preparing a sermon of her own. Having absorbed a considerable amount of Prayer Book wisdom from overhearing church life, she seems convinced that she has important theological insights to share.
And perhaps she does.
Though the staff has grown very fond of their unofficial church cat, they know that Evangeline deserves something more secure than life beside a busy road and an active parking lot.
What she truly needs is a forever home.
A home with a warm lap waiting at the end of the day. A sunny windowsill from which to supervise the neighborhood. Perhaps a barn where she can put her hunting talents to good use. Most importantly, a home with people willing to listen to her stories and continue the conversations she so eagerly begins.
Evangeline has already found her voice.
Now she needs someone to hear it every day.
So we ask you to consider opening your heart and your home to this black-and-white package of delight. She has brought joy, laughter, and companionship to the church community. Now she deserves a family of her own—one that will love her, listen to her, and give her the safe, happy future she has worked so hard to find.
Evangeline is ready for a home. 🐾
