Evangeline’s Story Continues
You may recall the heartfelt story we shared over the summer about the little cat who appeared beneath the church steps and slowly worked her way into our hearts. (Read the original post here.)
Well, so many parishioners have become invested in her story that we felt an update was in order.
Evangeline has decided to stay awhile, and in the process, she has been training all of us in the proper care and appreciation of a church cat. The black-and-white beauty is sweet, talkative, and occasionally very sassy, making her a constant source of enjoyment around the church grounds.
She has established quite a routine for herself. Each morning, she is ready to greet the staff and provide a full report of her nighttime adventures. Whether she has been patrolling the grounds, conducting important inspections, or simply enjoying the evening air, Evangeline always has something to say, and she expects us to listen.
As activity around the church increased this fall, the staff wondered how she would respond. Would she disappear when larger groups gathered? Would all the extra excitement be too much for her?
Evangeline quickly answered those questions.
Not only does she tolerate the activity, she seems to thrive on it. She welcomes visitors, supervises events, and often places herself right in the middle of whatever is happening. She appears to believe that every gathering is improved by the presence of a cat.
At first, we tucked her away during events like the Low Country Boil and the first Body & Soul gathering, hoping to keep her safe and comfortable. Last night, however, we decided to let Evangeline be Evangeline. She handled it perfectly.
Last night, many of our children and youth met her for the first time, and she greeted them as if she had been preparing for the occasion all along.
There is no doubt that Evangeline is well cared for. Parishioners regularly ask about her and often seek her out for a quick visit and a few pets. The staff faithfully sees to her daily needs and medical care, and she has become a cherished part of life at All Saints’.
Her name could not be more fitting. The name Evangeline is derived from a word meaning bearer of good news. From the day she emerged from beneath the church steps and began singing her way into our lives, she has been doing exactly that. Whether greeting parishioners in the parking lot, attending coffee and prayer gatherings, supervising activities, or seeking out a friendly lap for a few moments of affection, Evangeline has a way of bringing smiles wherever she goes.
In many ways, she has become an ambassador of welcome for our church grounds. Visitors often meet her before they meet any of us. Children delight in her. Parishioners ask about her by name. Even on the busiest days, her cheerful presence reminds us to pause, enjoy the moment, and appreciate the simple gifts of companionship and joy.
Evangeline is her name, and spreading good news is her calling. Her particular gospel is delivered through a swishing tail, bright green eyes, and a conversation that never seems to end. Day after day, she shares her message faithfully: there is always room for a little kindness, a little connection, and a little joy.
We think that is very good news indeed.
